Inspired by my spring 2024 trip to New York, Easy Fix came to be. When I stepped foot on the streets of New York, the evidence of the crisis of homelessness was everywhere. While some disadvantaged citizens slept on the corners of the street, trying to blend into the shadows on each wall, their shivering bodies stood out, like the bright neon green used in my installation piece. Their facial expressions remained hollow and dark, usually with not a single drop of livelihood still left in them, like a great big black hole that could not be filled. The homeless people stood out to me in the streets, filling every corner of this huge city, making it hard to not notice them. However, when locals walk past them, it’s as if they are invisible, non-existent. Even if the people begged for spare change they would be ignored. Easy Fix is a social commentary on the crisis of homelessness we have today, not just in New York, but all around the world. We must find long-term solutions instead of short-term easy fixes, and that starts by noticing the problem around us, and thinking to ourselves, “What can I do?”
