ID, Ego, Superego
Project type
Sculpture
Date
June 2024
Location
Vancouver
This clay sculpture explores the dynamics between three parts of our identity: ID, ego and superego. ID is pleasure-seeking, rendered in pink and purple with an open mouth and long teeth expressing a sense of devourment with colours associated with enjoyment. Ego is rational and conscious, rendered in blue with rounder teeth and an uplifted expression, representing calmness. Superego is judgmental and morally correct represented by green, symbolizing spontaneous growth. Intertwined, they push and pull each other balancing the wholeness. However, the balance is precarious; any disturbance in these relationships could cause a collapse. The three parts face each other, aware of each other’s strengths and vulnerabilities. This intimacy implies the possibility of manipulation, as some antennas wave, brewing hidden plots. When balance breaks, mental stability collapses as well.
